At the 2019 Retreat we had an “Ask the General” segment since Dr. J. K. Warrick served as General Superintendent from 2005 to 2017. The question was asked, “What spiritual books have formed and encouraged you?” And Dr. Warrick responded with the following:
Three of the most powerful books I have ever read are, The Unshakeable Kingdom and The Unchanging Person by E. Stanley Jones and John Powell’s (a Catholic writer) book A Reason to Live, A Reason to Die!: A New Look at Faith in God.
He also mentioned he liked The Way of the Heart: Connecting with God Through Prayer, Wisdom, and Silence by Henri J. M. Nowen. Dr. Warrick also mentioned he loved the writings of Frederick Beuchner (a Presbyterian). He doesn’t agree with everything he says, but he likes him because he is such a unique writer.
He is enjoying Grace Notes: Daily Readings with Philip Yancey by Phillip Yancy.
Also, Choices of the Heart by Douglas Webster – although a hard book to find.
The Signature of Jesus by Brennon Manning (Dr. Warrick doesn’t like all of his books, and he doesn’t agree with his lifestyle, but this book is one of the best holiness books he’s ever read and just to be sure he was thinking correctly he had a SNU professor read it and he agreed). Dr. Warrick preached thru the book at Olathe College Church on Sunday nights and it was well received.
Also, Eugene Peterson’s A Long Obedience in the Same Direction (Songs of the Ascents)
When asked about books of the Bible, Dr. Warrick mentioned he loved The Gospel of John and the book of Philippians… “I like it all!”
